Colorful Asphalt Shingles

Pros & Cons of Asphalt Shingles

When it comes to roofing materials, none is more universally used than asphalt shingles.  They are the most common roofing material on residential homes in the United States, and for good reason. They offer a variety of benefits for the homeowners who choose to install them. However, like any other roofing material option, they also present their own drawbacks that should be considered before installation.  Take a look at our blog to learn about the pros and cons of asphalt shingles.

Pros:

Longevity: Asphalt shingles have a variable lifespan depending on the quality of the shingles themselves, but generally, they have a competitively long lifespan.  On average, a well-maintained asphalt shingle roof will last from 20-30 years.  However, the highest quality asphalt shingles have been known to last for 50 years or more.

Ease of Installation: Generally, a contractor who installs roofs of any sort is able to install asphalt shingles.  They are one of the easiest roofing materials to install, as they are simpler to install than metal roofing, and far less fragile than slate, which is prone to cracking if you don’t know how to work with the material. This also makes it easy to find another contractor who can make repairs on your roof if need be.

Economical: If you are interested in replacing your roof on a budget, asphalt shingles are certainly your best option. Metal and slate roofing both cost twice as much as your typical asphalt shingle roof, making it the best option if you are interested in replacing your roof for a good price.

Aesthetics: When it comes to style options, no other materials can truly compare to asphalt shingles. Due to the fact that so many manufacturers produce asphalt shingles, they are available an in enormous variety of styles, colors, and even textures. If you have a particular color scheme or aesthetic in mind for your home, asphalt shingles are likely your best bet to fulfill your vision.

Cons:

Environmental Effect: If you are interested in installing a roofing option that offers environmental benefits, there are better options than asphalt roofing. Fossil fuels are used in the manufacturing of asphalt shingles, which immediately hurts their ability to be an environmentally roofing option. Furthermore, asphalt shingles account for about 5% of the United States yearly waste.  With so many shingles being thrown away at the end of their lifespans, it’s hard for asphalt shingles to be a truly green roofing option.  Hopefully as the recycling process gets better, asphalt shingles will become a green option in their own right.

Maintenance: If you are interested in installing a roofing material that you won’t have to think about once its been installed on your home, asphalt shingles are not the best option.  They require periodic maintenance to keep in good shape, from keeping debris cleared from your roof, to ensuring you take care of any moss or algae growth that occurs.

Overall, asphalt shingles are a wonderful roofing option for any home.   While they have a couple of clear drawbacks, they offer so many benefits that make them truly competitive with any other roofing material on the market.  Here at Advanced Roofing & Siding, we are happy to be able to offer our homeowners the Owens Corning line of asphalt shingles.  Owens Corning is one of the premier shingle manufacturers in North America and we are happy to be able to install their wonderful products for our homeowners.
